Our philosophy
Our philosophy is based on one observation: Sound decisions are rarely made between appointments. And memories that last deserve more than just a fleeting moment.
Das Steinberg was created for anyone who wants to gain some perspective without withdrawing from the world. We are convinced that it is not just the occasion that determines the quality of an experience, but also the space in which it takes place.
A message from the owner Julian Hadschieff
At 1,010 meters above sea level, nestled in the Tyrolean mountains and yet just a few minutes from Lake Achensee, entrepreneur Julian Hadschieff discovered Das Steinberg — a place whose unique atmosphere captivated him from the very first moment.
Architecture in transformation
Under the guidance of our architect and family member Vinzent Hadschieff , a clean, cohesive design emerged that gently bridges the existing structure with the present. He was not only responsible for the interior design but also designed the garden pavilion, which blends harmoniously into the newly landscaped outdoor space.
We also placed special emphasis on selecting local materials and partners. As a result, the pavilion was constructed using locally sourced larch that had been made available by recent windfalls and could thus be reused in a sustainable manner.
Art as part of the room
As soon as you drive up, you encounter Oliver Larics work “Die Metamorphose,” which explores the themes of change and transformation. In the entrance area, a carefully balanced work by Vinzent Hadschieff adds another distinctive touch.
In the Bergblick Hall, two works by the Tyrolean artist Hannah Philomena Schreiber define the space while also entering into a direct dialogue with the surrounding natural landscape. In the lounge on the mezzanine level above the lobby, two works by Eva Wagner are presented as a diptych.
1989
Built in 1989 by Hans Peter Petri, the former Windegg set a defining standard for Alpine architecture. A minimalist design language, precision craftsmanship, and a deep connection to nature defined the design—a far cry from common Alpine clichés.
2003
The subsequent expansion by the architectural team Hans-Mathoi-Streli consistently carried this approach forward: clean lines, precise use of materials, and a contemporary architectural language complement the existing structure while preserving its original character.
2025
After years of stagnation, the building is now experiencing a new heyday. Together with Scharmer-Wurnig Architects, we focused on a respectful, careful transformation. Targeted interventions have a noticeable effect without overshadowing the building’s serene aesthetic.

Das Steinberg is the result of a vision, a unique location, and many deliberate decisions. Here you can learn more about the people, the architecture, and the ideas that have shaped this place and made Das Steinberg what it is today.
The idea arose from the belief that people need places that consciously take them out of the routines of their everyday lives. Das Steinberg was further developed to provide a setting for clarity, dialogue, and shared experiences.
Art and design are intentionally woven into the atmosphere of Das Steinberg. Together with the architecture and the Tyrolean landscape, they open up new perspectives, spark conversations, and give the hotel its modern, distinctive character.
Throughout the hotel, guests will encounter a selection of works by contemporary artists. These include pieces by Hannah Philomena Schreiber in the Bergblick Room, Eva Wagner’s diptych “Im Schilf” and “Verhalmungen” in the lounge above the lobby, Oliver Laric’s sculpture “Die Metamorphose” in the outdoor area, and a work by Vinzent Hadschieff in the entrance area.
Das Steinberg is located at 1,010 meters above sea level in Steinberg am Rofan, just a few kilometers from Lake Achensee. The surrounding mountains create an environment that fosters concentration, social interaction, and relaxation in equal measure.
