Das Steinberg - Architecture with Soul

Embedded in the mountain landscape of Steinberg am Rofan, “Das Steinberg” tells a unique architectural story. Built in 1989 by Hans Peter Petri, the former “Windegg” made a bold statement in Alpine architecture – characterized by a reduced design language, artisanal precision, and a deep connection to nature, far from kitsch and clichés.

The later extension by the architectural team Hans-Mathoi-Streli consistently carried this philosophy forward. The architecture remained clear and honest, while opening itself up to a contemporary interpretation that respectfully complemented the existing structure.

After years of stagnation, the house is now experiencing a new renaissance. Together with Scharmer-Wurnig Architects, we are focusing on gentle transformation and respect for the original building. Small interventions such as enlarged windows bring light and presence without compromising the calm aesthetic of the facade.

Under the creative direction of our architect and family member Vinzent Hadschieff, a clear line was developed that connects old and new. In addition to designing the interior spaces, he also created the garden pavilion, which integrates harmoniously into the newly landscaped outdoor area.

A special concern was the choice of local materials and partners. The wood for the pavilion comes from native larch trees that were released by recent windstorms.

“Das Steinberg” is now a place of history,
soul and an architectural vision for the future.
